Binocular Vision by Edith Pearlman7/8/2023 ![]() "Hanging Fire" is a perfectly crafted story about a 21-year-old college graduate, Nancy, on the cusp of embarking on life and certain only of her obligation to herself. A fictional Godolphin, Mass., is the setting for many of the stories, such as "Rules," in which the well-meaning staff at a soup kitchen try not to pry into the lives of the "cheats and crazies, drunks and dealers" who frequent the place. Pearlman's characters for the most part are stiff-upper-lipped Northeasterners who take what comes and don't grumble: in "The Noncombatant," Richard, a 49-year-old doctor suffering gravely from cancer during the tail end of WWII, rages quietly in his small Cape Cod town as celebrations erupt and memories of the wasted lives of the dead are swept away. ![]() ![]() A finely tuned collection by writer's writer Pearlman combines the best of previous collections (How to Fall etc.) with austere, polished new work. ![]()

Cat and mouse gunter grass7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Hence, the very act of narration is an evocation of the past, a resurrection from oblivion. Owing to political developments after World War II, Grass was forced to sever his ties with his place of birth forever: Danzig became the Polish Gda5sk, a city that the author was able to visit repeatedly and with which he maintained close ties, but a city that was no longer the predominantly German-speaking Danzig of his youth. ![]() In fact, this significance has been compared to that of Dublin for James Joyce or Yoknapatawpha County for William Faulkner. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the title of the trilogy, which was later expanded to a “sextet,” reflects the extraordinary significance of Grass’s birthplace for his fiction. Although Günter Grass’s (1927 – 2015) novel The Tin Drum forms the first part of the Danzig Trilogy and shares some characters, events, and themes with Cat and Mouse and Dog Years, the novel was conceived independently and can be discussed without explicit reference to the other two works. ![]()

![]() ![]() These latter results support a 2-dimensional model of sexual orientation in which homosexuality and heterosexuality are treated as separate, independent factors. Strong support was obtained for the hypothesis that sexual orientation relates primarily to erotic fantasy orientation. Results generally fail to support the hypotheses derived from sex role theories of sexual orientation within each sex, homosexuals, heterosexuals, and bisexuals did not differ on measures of masculinity and femininity. Heterosexual, bisexual, and homosexual undergraduates (185 Ss) were administered measures of their masculine and feminine attributes (determined by the Personal Attributes Questionnaire) and their erotic fantasies (measured by the Erotic Response and Orientation Scale). Hypotheses derived from these 2 assumptions were tested. Various theories assume that sexual orientation is related to sex role orientation or to erotic orientation. ![]()

Doomsday book novel7/7/2023 ![]() ![]() A military border is set up along the river to keep the sickness from spreading west, but this is a border that Gary is determined to cross. Wilson Tucker, The Long Loud Silence (1952)Įverything east of the Mississippi has been destroyed by a nuclear attack the scant survivors have been dosed with a bioweapon that has infected them with the plague (just to be safe, I suppose). Of course, there are plenty more great apocalypse and post-apocalypse novels that didn’t fit on this list, and I haven’t read enough books in translation in this genre, so as ever, please add on your own favorites in the comments. We could argue all day about what actually constitutes an “apocalypse”-2020 is checking a lot of boxes, as you may have noticed-so for the most part, I’ve gone with my gut. I’ve done my best to limit this list to books in which there is-or has been-some kind of literal apocalypse, excluding dystopias (like The Handmaid’s Tale) or simply bleak visions of the future. Humans have been pondering the end of existence for as long as we’ve been aware of it (probably, I mean, I wasn’t there), and as a result we have a rich collection of apocalypse and post-apocalypse literature to read during our planet’s senescence. ![]() ![]() ![]() After all, someone must survive to tell the tale. The end of the world is never really the end of the world-at least not in fiction. ![]()
